* Altitude sickness is a common experience for all visitors in Cusco. To minimize symptoms, it is advisable to spend one or two days in the city before starting the hike.

Early in the morning, you will be picked up from your hotel. You will arrive in Soqma, located at 3,520 m asl, a small village that is part of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

After breakfast in Soqma and a brief rest, you will start the hike, passing through the archaeological center of Perolniyoc, located at 3,520 m asl. In addition to admiring the Inca ruins, hikers will be amazed by the Perolniyoc waterfall, known as the “bride’s veil”, which descends majestically from the Andes. During lunch in the Rayan Community, at 3,650 m asl, you will have the opportunity to try typical regional dishes made with fresh local ingredients.

After lunch, you will head to the Chancachuco pass, at 3,804 m asl, from where you can admire in the distance the imposing snow-capped mountain by the same name, part of the Andes Mountain range. During the approximate 4-hour hike, hikers will be able to enjoy the unique flora and fauna of the region, including species of Andean birds and plants. In the late afternoon, you will arrive at the Charcahuaylla campsite, where you will have dinner and spend the night.

Early in the morning, after breakfast, you will begin the descent trek towards the Cachicata quarry, located at 3,886 m asl, a journey that will take approximately an hour and a half. Here, you will have the opportunity to explore the quarry and admire the ancient Inca constructions. Then, you will descend towards Ollantaytambo, a charming village about two hours away. Around noon, you will enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by the experienced group chefs. As an additional option, before boarding the afternoon train to Aguas Calientes, you can visit the archaeological site of Ollantaytambo, where you will explore places of interest such as Pincuynulla, museums dedicated to chicha and corn, or even enjoy a relaxing bath in the local hot springs. In the afternoon, you will catch the train to Aguas Calientes, where you will spend the night.

The day starts early with breakfast to catch one of the first buses to the top of the mountain, where Machu Picchu is located, one of the wonders of the ancient world and one of Peru’s most iconic destinations. Once on-site, your guide will accompany you on a tour of the ancient Inca ruins, including temples, agricultural terraces, and ceremonial structures, providing you with the opportunity to immerse yourself in the fascinating history and culture of this ancient civilization. Additionally, you will enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views offered by this enclave, located high in the Peruvian Andes. In the afternoon, you will descend back to Aguas Calientes to catch the train back to Ollantaytambo and from there, transportation to Cusco, concluding this exciting day.

What to bring on the Cachicata Trek 3-day trip:

  • A lightweight backpack for the journey
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Rain gear (jacket and pants) or rain poncho
  • Special trekking footwear, waterproof boots recommended
  • Warm clothing, including jacket, fleece, gloves, scarf, and hat. Thermal clothing is also recommended, especially for sleeping
