This 4-day trek from Cusco to Machu Picchu offers an exciting experience. Begin with a journey to the Lares Valley, where you will enjoy panoramic views of mountains and glaciers, relaxing in hot springs before a 4-hour hike to Huaca Wasi for camping. The next day, wake up to a scenic hike to Miski Unuyoc, with lunch by the majestic Lake Auroray and camping at Manantay. On the third day, explore the Urubamba Valley and the Queñua forest before boarding the train to Aguas Calientes. Finally, visit Machu Picchu, with free time to explore before returning to Cusco.

* Altitude sickness is a common experience for all visitors in Cusco. To minimize symptoms, it is advisable to spend one or two days in the city before starting the hike.

The guide will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco (the schedule may vary depending on whether you are staying in the Sacred Valley). You will head to the starting point of the Inca Trail in Pisqacucho. After a brief journey of approximately 2 hours drive, you will arrive at Km 82, where you will pass through a checkpoint where entrance tickets, Inca Trail permits, passport, and, if you are a student, the corresponding student ID, are verified before entry. Once past the checkpoint, your hike on the Inca Trail will officially begin. The first day typically involves about 6-7 hours of moderate hiking along varied terrain, including flat stretches, gentle ascents, and descents. In the morning, you will trek approximately 6 km through a dry forest until you reach Llactapata. Here you will have the opportunity to explore the first archaeological ruins surrounded by spectacular landscapes, including views of snow-capped mountains, green valleys, and the Urubamba River winding through the valley. Later you will stop where the porter team and the cook will be waiting for you with lunch to replenish your energy.

After lunch, you will start a 4 km ascent through farmland and grazing areas until you reach the campsite at Wayllabamba where you will enjoy a comforting dinner and spend the night.

Get ready to face the biggest challenge of the trekking, but it will be totally worth it! The day starts early, waking up at sunrise so time is not a pressure and you can enjoy the day to the fullest. After passing through various villages and absorbing the energy of the mountains, you will reach Warmi Wañusqa, where you will stop for lunch. After a well-deserved break, you will face the steepest part of the trail at 4,220 meters: the Dead Woman’s Pass.

The feeling when reaching this iconic summit will be simply incredible. After being at the highest point, you will descend 600 meters over more than 3 km (or 1.8 miles) of trail through a lush and humid forest to reach the overnight campsite at Pacaymayo.

After breakfast, you will descend towards the second most important pass of the route, located at 3,850 m (12,632 ft) above sea level. During this descent, you will explore the Runkurakay archaeological complex and the majestic Inca citadel of Sayacmarca, where you will stop for lunch. Continuing along the trail, you will reach Phuyupatamarca, known as “a town in the clouds,” an important archaeological monument that will leave you amazed. After a brief rest, the hike continues to Wiñay Wayna, which means “Forever Young,” for a guided tour. This archaeological site is notable for its beauty and spectacular natural surroundings. Finally, you will head to the campsite to enjoy a comforting dinner and spend the night under the stars.

A very early rise to head towards Machu Picchu and witness a spectacular sunrise! After a one-hour hike through the forest, you will reach Inti Punku, also known as the Sun Gate, from here you will enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the Machu Picchu citadel.

Upon arrival at Machu Picchu, you will learn about the impressive Inca citadel for two and a half hours, sharing the secrets, history, and architecture of this wonder of the world. You will also have the option to climb Huayna Picchu, where you will be rewarded with the most spectacular view of Machu Picchu. However, please note that the new permit system requires all visitors to purchase a separate ticket for this experience. After the guided tour, you will have free time to explore and take photos at the various points of interest in Machu Picchu. Later, you will return by bus or on foot to the town of Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival at the Ollantaytambo train station, you will be taken to the hotel to enjoy a restful night’s sleep.

What to bring on the 4-day Inca Trail:

  • A lightweight backpack
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Rain gear (jacket and pants) or rain poncho
  • Special trekking footwear, waterproof boots recommended
  • Warm clothing, including jacket, fleece liners, gloves, scarf, and hat. Thermal clothing is also recommended, especially for sleeping
