Palcoyo is a mountain located in the Cusco region, renowned for the stunning color hues on its slopes. It is often considered a less crowded alternative to Rainbow Mountain, providing hikers with the opportunity to enjoy a quieter and less touristy environment while exploring its natural beauty. This trekking also offers visitors a quieter and more leisurely hike, with less physical exertion.

* Altitude sickness is a common experience for all visitors in Cusco. To minimize symptoms, it is advisable to spend one or two days in the city before starting the hike.

The adventure begins early in the morning. You will be picked up from your hotel and head to Checacupe by tourist transportation. During the drive, you will admire a suspension bridge built by the Quechua people, which facilitated transport in the Inca Empire; a perfect opportunity to take some photos. Then, you will continue towards Palcoyo, where you can marvel at the stunning colors of the mountain. For those who wish to explore further, an optional 50-minute hike to a vantage point is offered to get the best view of the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain Range.

Additionally, nearby you will find a stone forest, a unique rock formation resembling a tree forest. After enjoying the landscape and vibrant colors, you will stop for a delicious lunch. Finally, return to Cusco.

Notes

What to bring for the one-day Palcoyo trek:

  • Lightweight backpack for the trip
  • Rain gear (jacket and pants) or rain poncho
  • Special trekking shoes, waterproof boots recommended
  • Warm clothing, including jacket, fleece liners, gloves, scarf, and hat. Thermal clothing is also recommended.
  • Camera, films, and batteries (batteries deplete faster in cold weather conditions)
  • Hat or cap to protect against sun, rain, and cold
  • Sunscreen and after-sun lotion or moisturizer for face and body
