Waqra Pukara Trek

Days 1 day Nights

Located approximately 130 kilometers southeast of Machu Picchu and about 60 km from Cusco, Waqrapukara was until recently outside the conventional tourist circuit. Even locals hardly know this place. Situated at an altitude of 4,140 m asl, Waqrapukara offers an exciting trekking option for nature lovers, stunning landscapes, and less-traveled routes. Its high-altitude location allows for panoramic views that surpass the grandeur of many other South American wonders.

* Altitude sickness is a common experience for all visitors in Cusco. To minimize symptoms, it is advisable to spend one or two days in the city before starting the hike.

This exciting day will begin with a pick up from your hotel to start the journey towards Waqrapukara. After approximately an hour and a half, you will arrive at Cusipata, where you will stop for breakfast. Then you will continue towards the village of Marcaconga for about another hour and a half and reach the place known as Punta Carretera. Here you will make a brief 10-minute stop for final preparations before starting the hike towards Waqrapukara.

You will start on a slightly inclined flat path for the first two hours, offering brief ascents and descents while enjoying beautiful landscapes, such as the high-altitude Andean Cochas lakes. From here, you will begin the descent towards the Waqrapukara viewpoint, where you will stop to enjoy the first views of the Waqrapukara Archaeological Complex. Next, you will begin the descent towards the ceremonial center, which will take us approximately 40 minutes, during which you will be able to admire the imposing rock formations in the Apurímac River Valley.

After exploring the Waqrapukara ceremonial center for about an hour and a half and taking lots of photos, the return trip will begin. You will ascend for approximately an hour until reaching the Waqrapukara vintage point, where you will take a 10-minute break. Then you will continue ascending for about 30 more minutes to reach Cochas, where you will start the flat route back to Punta Carretera which will take 2 hours.

Once there, transportation will be waiting to take you back to the city of Cusco.
